Ocean Gate Police Officer Jason Marles was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver early on Thanksgiving morning. Friends and family have been bringing flowers to the spot where the accident happened.
The suspect was captured with several friends after attempting to flee the scene. Marles was trapped in his personal jeep, according to police which then exploded into flames after it was pushed into a guardrail.
Ironically, the accident happened just after the father of two was finishing his shift working at a DUI checkpoint on Thanksgiving Eve.

Undoubtedly there will be many DUI checkpoints in your area this Thanksgiving Eve. The easiest and safest way to avoid any issues with the law relating to drinking and driving is by designating yourself a sober driver.
We will be available for some last minute calls if you need us. Please give us at least an hour and be flexible to our availability as we are trying to help everyone we can. We have our reservations list filled up from 1am until 3am but we will do our best to squeeze everyone in.
Even if you chose not to call us, please be smart and plan ahead. Ask a parent, friend, or family member if they will be available to help you get home safely. If you plan on not going out or are choosing not to drink yourself, please offer yourself to your loved ones as an alternative to drinking and driving themselves. If you are not available to help your loved one, we have gift cards available to purchase.
These GIFT CARDS are a wonderful gift that are a win-win for all of us. You will have peace of mind, your loved ones will get home safe without a DUI, and any unsuspecting driver on the road will have one less obstacle to worry about if your loved one uses their Sober Sam GIFT CARD.

A Philadelphia man was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison for a fatal 2009 crash in New Jersey.
On September 12, 2009, Philadelphia native John J. Lawless, had been drinking way too much, a habit dating back over twenty years. But on this fateful night, it would cost another family the life of a loved one. Lawless was traveling north on Route 9 near Cape May when his car careened into the southbound lane and crashing into the car of the Shelton family.
The husband, Frederick Shelton, died at the scene, his wife and young daughter by his side. His wife, Sheri Shelton, suffered a few broken bones and some internal injuries, their 13-year-old daughter Brittany was also hospitalized.
It was believed to be Lawless’ 8th DWI offense over the past 20 years. According to Court Judge Raymond Batten, “This defendant is simply unwilling or unable to abide by the law…The history of DWI offenses is clear. It is excessive. It is repetitive.”
Lawless was sentenced to 30 years in prison for DWI Manslaughter.
