St. Patrick’s Day and the DUI’s that come with it

So far this year, 76 people have died on state roadways compared with 120 people during the same time period last year. That’s a decrease of 36.7 percent.

“This should be easy by now since the message is always the same: don’t drink and drive. Those who gamble on driving under the influence may find their lives changed in a moment. They’re likely to lose their licenses, their freedom, or their lives as the result,” said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.

On St. Patrick’s Day 2008, 37 percent of the drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes nationally had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above, according to statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In addition, NHTSA statistics show that in 2008, there were 134 crash fatalities on St. Patrick’s Day. Out of that number, 50 people were killed in traffic crashes that involved at least one driver with a BAC of .08 or higher

Ignition Interlock Devices for DUI’s in New Jersey

Two more bills to be signed into law are intended to make the state’s roadways a little safer by toughening penalties for driving under the influence.

The first bill – A3073 – increases the use of ignition interlock devices for drunken drivers.

Until now, New Jersey judges were given the option to require the use of ignition interlocks for first-time offenders for six months to a year after their license was restored. The devices are already required for repeat offenders for one to three years.

The new law, which took effect immediately, mandates ignition interlocks for first offenders whose blood alcohol content is at least 0.15 percent – nearly twice New Jersey’s 0.08 limit.

Also signed into law is a bill – A4303 – designed to crack down on motorists repeatedly caught driving under the influence or with a suspended license.

Senate President Richard Codey, D-Essex, said he was spurred to pursue the legislation after a Morris Township, NJ, crash in April 2009 that was caused by a man with 12 previous DUI convictions and 78 license suspensions.

Jail time would be mandatory for anyone caught driving under the influence while already suspended for a DUI or refusal to take a breath test. Convicted offenders would face six months to one year behind bars and up to a $10,000 fine.

No Traffic Deaths During New Year

Preliminary data released by the New Jersey State Police showed no traffic deaths during the three-day New Year holiday, the first holiday weekend without an auto fatality in the state in at least six years, a report in NorthJersey.com said.

The report referred to traffic reports from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 through 6 a.m. Monday, according to the report. Sgt. Stephen Jones told the newspaper he credits enforcement of drunk driving laws, DWI checkpoints and increased awareness of the dangers of driving while intoxicated, the report said.

New Jersey Cracks Down On Drinking and Driving

The Vernon Township Police will be cracking down on drunk drivers as part of their annual holiday season, “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign. Beginning Dec. 7 and running through Jan. 3, 2010, local and state law enforcement officials will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.

A concentrated national effort, the campaign helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high-visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters, banners and mobile video display signs. Launched nationally in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during some of the busiest travel times during the year.

Tiger Woods Suspected of Drinking and Driving

According to The Star, a Florida Highway Patrol officer believes that Tiger Woods was drinking the day he crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and then a tree outside his house.

On November 30th, the trooper requested an investigative subpoena for Woods’ blood test results but was turned down by the State Attorney’s Office because there was not enough information provided. However, at the time, the document listed the possible cause of the crime as, “Driving Under the Influence with Property Damage”. The subpoena request went on to say, “The driver lost control of his vehicle, crashed and was transported to the hospital. A witness stated that the driver had consumed alcohol earlier in the day and the same witness removed the driver from the vehicle after the collision”.

It is also believed that the driver of the vehicle, “was prescribed medication (Ambien and Vicatin (sic)). Impairment of the driver is also suspected due to the careless driving that resulted in the traffic crash.”

Over The Limit, Under Arrest

All over New Jersey, police officers are cracking down on drunk drivers with the, “Over The Limit, Under Arrest” campaign.

Between December 7th through January 3rd, high concentrations of police officers will conduct patrols and sobriety checkpoints trying to eliminate those people who decided to drink and drive.

According to the Salem County Sunbeam, “Impaired drivers kill nearly 18,000 people on our nation’s roadways each year, according to the news release. In 2008, 152 people were killed as a result of alcohol-related crashes in New Jersey. That number represents 26 percent of the 590 traffic fatalities reported in the state.”

Also only in the state of New Jersey, drivers may dial #77 on their cell phones to report drunk drivers to the police. #77 is the Aggressive Driver System used to report erratic or dangerous drivers, including anyone driving drunk.

The Cedar Grove Police Department announced that it will participate in the impaired driving enforcement campaign, “Over the Limit, Under Arrest,” the year-end statewide crackdown, between Dec. 7 and Jan. 3, 2010.

During the crackdown period, Cedar Grove officers will be out in full force to detect, arrest and prosecute any motorist found to be operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” program helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters and banners. Launched nationally in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during some of the busiest travel times of the year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nationally, drunk-driving fatalities accounted for 32 percent of all traffic deaths in 2008. Last year in New Jersey, 152 people were killed as a result of alcohol related crashes. This number represents 26 percent of the 590 traffic fatalities reported in the state last year.

The police department offers the following advice that drivers should follow year round:

* If you plan to drink, designate a driver.

* Realize that every drink you have makes it more difficult to know when you’ve had too much to drive.

* If you plan to drink, take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive.

* If you’ve had too much to drink, spend the night where the activity is being held.

* Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.

* Always buckle up – it’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

Florida Gators Suspend Carlos Dunlap Over DUI Charge

Just a few days before the SEC Championship game against #2 ranked Alabama, the Florida Gators suspended their star defensive end, Carlos Dunlap over his recent DUI arrest.

Police in Gainesville, Florida found Dunlap late Monday night, asleep at the wheel while stopped at a red light. He was arrested and taken into custody without any problems.

Carlos Dunlap is a sure top-ten pick in the NFL draft next year but may have cost himself a top five selection as well as the millions of dollars that go with that honor.
