The New York Senate gave unanimous approval to Leandra’s law, just one day after it got unanimous support in the Assembly. The law is named for Leandra Rosado. The 11 year-old was killed when her friend’s mom drove drunk, and crashed on the way to a sleepover in Manhattan. Leandra’s father joined Governor Paterson for the announcement.
“I lost my only child as a single parent. She was my heart, my soul, my best friend,” said Lenny Rosado. “And the day after I made a decision, that I don’t want to see another parent or grandparent lose their child the way I lost my child, to someone who was very reckless or negligent.”
The law makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child 15 or younger in the car. It also requires anyone with a dwi conviction to have a device installed — that prevents you from starting your car — if you are intoxicated.
