Police throughout New Jersey plan on cracking down on Drunk Driving this holiday season as part of “Over the Limit, Under Arrest.” Through January 2, 2011, local authorities plan on raising awareness through advertisements, public speaking and having more police visibility to try and fight Drunk Driving during the most dangerous time on the roads.
Last year alone, 189 people were killed in New Jersey were killed as a result of alcohol related fatalities, 32% of the total fatalities in traffic accidents for the state. The following is advice from the Division of Highway Traffic Safety:
* If you’ve consumed alcohol, even just one drink, take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
* Report impaired drivers to law enforcement. In New Jersey, drivers may dial #77 to report a drunk or aggressive driver.
* If you’re intoxicated, and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member escort you safely to your doorstep.
* Always buckle up, every ride, regardless of your seating position in the vehicle. It’s the best defense against an impaired driver.
